There’s a new warning out about the increased violence taking place in hospitals and other medical facilities.
The Joint Commission recently warned that rates of crime in general, and violent crime in particular, are rising steadily in health care facilities. Routinely, assault, rape and homicide are among the top ten sentinel events reported by medical centers, according to The Joint Commission. And it’s believed that all three violent crimes are significantly under-reported.
The Joint Commission suggested facilities take 13 specific steps to reduce the incidence of crime. They include:
- Evaluating risk of violence on-site
- Encouraging employees to report crimes to law enforcement, and
- Increasing security precautions in the emergency department
