Regions that saw spring H1N1 outbreak spared so far

While H1N1 is officially “widespread” throughout the country, certain areas of the country are seeing less activity so far this season. Of course, it’s early in the flu season and incidence of the disease could still pick up dramatically. But public health officials are noticing a pattern: Areas that had big outbreaks in the spring (including New York and Philadelphia) are seeing fewer H1N1 cases now.
The current theory is that in heavily affected areas this spring, much of the population has already been exposed and developed immunity — leading to fewer cases this fall and winter.
But public health agencies are still treating that as only a theory, and have advised state and local agencies to keep up vaccination efforts.
