Quality measures show improvement

A new report from the Joint Commission shows that hospitals’ efforts to improve key quality scores are definitely working.

The report tracked 31 quality and safety measures among more than 3,000 hospitals over the past seven years.

The measures are examined in sets: childhood asthma, heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, and surgical care.

The ratings based on a numerical index that tops out at 100%, and the results were encouraging. Many measures showing dramatic improvement. For example, among the major  sets:

• Pneumonia care improved  to 92.9%, up from only 59.7% in 2002, and
• Heart failure care increased to 91.6%, up from 72.3%

There’s still room for improvement however, especially on some of the individual measurements.
