President Obama has ordered the Department of Health and Human Services to issue new rules that would grant more rights to same-sex partners when one is hospitalized.
The new rules would grant same-sex partners visitation rights and make it easier for them to make medical decisions for their partners. The ultimate goal is to ensure same-sex partners aren’t restricted any more than immediate family members would be.
The new rules, which most likely won’t go into effect for several months, would apply to any hospital that participates in Medicare or Medicaid.
